Why Do I Need Hip Internal Rotation?

There's more to hip rotation than you think.

You've probably seen Instagram posts hyping up hip mobility drills, but they don't always tell you why you need hip mobility outside of having a better-looking squat.

Hip internal rotation is important for:

1) Running mechanicsā£

2) Pivoting/ cuttingā£

3) Hip Rotation in sportsā£

4) Force absorption ā£

And more!ā£ ā£

And, get this, hip internal rotation is often the missing piece to functional hip extension!ā£ ā£

Have you been stretching your hip flexors and quads with no improvement in your hip extension?

When the hip extends (walking, running, lunges, etc) the hip has to go into relative hip internal rotation.ā£ ā£

If you don’t have adequate hip IR, your body will find a work-around, usually in tibial rotation (heel whip), pelvis rotation, etc.ā£

Having some amount of mobility compensation isn't always a bad thing,

but getting that hip rotating some more might clean up your running mechanics.ā£
